About Counselling

Counselling is a process which enables individuals with problems or issues in their lives that are troubling them to talk about and reflect on these in a place where they will be listened to and respected with the help of a qualified counsellor - with the intention of enabling them to feel better about themselves by increasing their sense of self awareness and being in more control of their lives.

A counsellor will not advise or tell you what to do. Their role is to help and support you through the process of thinking about and reflecting on the issues that are worrying you and helping you to make changes to the way you think, feel and view your problems - with the intention of improving your quality of life and enabling you to feel better about yourself.

Counselling is very different from talking to a friend about problems which worry you. A friend may have vested interests, may not be able to respect the need for confidentiality and may want to advise you on what to do - rather than providing a supportive space where you will be listened to respectfully enabling you think about and reflect on the issues that are troubling you.

How can counselling and psychotherapy help me?

In today's stressful and impersonal world, where we live in fragmented societies alienated from our surroundings and from each other, counselling enables us to take our problems to a place where we will be listened to respectfully and where our thoughts and feelings will be regarded as important. Typical problems that we bring to counselling include anxiety, addiction, depression, issues to do with relationships, abuse, negative thoughts, obsessive compulsive thoughts, lack of self esteem, loneliness and coping with older age.

What benefits can I expect from counselling?

Counselling can help you deal with these kinds of problems and think through them from different perspectives - helping you to feel more at ease with yourself and more in control of what you say and do in relation to others - and thereby increasing your sense of self esteem.
